Load Testing and Certification

Proof load testing is designed to ensure that item of lifting equipment can perform to the required standard in accordance with manufacturer’s guidance, by giving it a full strength test. Proof load tests are often needed in addition to the statutory requirements, e.g. LOLER regulations.

When is Proof Load Testing Required?

A proof load test is required on installation of any lifting equipment before the item is brought into service.

There may be other times in the equipment’s life where a proof test is required, e.g.

  • Following a weld repair to a structural member
  • After a complete overhaul
  • Following an incident

Proof load tests on all types of lifting equipment with certification can be performed by Pro Cranes on the following equipment:

  • Overhead Cranes
  • Jib Cranes
  • Hoists
  • Runways
  • Gantries
  • Lifting Equipment
  • Chain Blocks
  • Chains
  • Toe Jacks
  • Jacks
  • Lifting Tackle
  • Winchess

All new and repaired lifting equipment must be proof tested and certified by a competent person. He/she is someone who has “such practical and theoretical knowledge and actual experience of the type of machinery or plant which he is to examine, as will enable him to detect weaknesses which is the purpose of the examination in relation to the strength and function of the particular machine or plant”. in law, the term “person” includes a body corporate (interpretation act, 1889) and the qualifications (both in knowledge and experience) need not necessarily be held by one person but may be the combined expertise of several members of a company. in practice, therefore, the certificate may be signed by the person carrying out the test and/or examination, or, more usually, by a designated person responsible for ensuring that the task is correctly carried out.
